Honda CR-V Curb Weight by Model Year and Trim
A current Honda CR-V weighs between about 3,470 and 3,930 lb, depending on trim and drivetrain. Honda lists the 2024 CR-V LX FWD at 3,472 lb and the Sport Touring Hybrid AWD at 3,926 lb. Older CR-Vs are lighter: a 2000 CR-V LX FWD weighs 3,126 lb, so the nameplate has added roughly 350 lb at the base level over 25 years.
The tables below give curb weight by generation, model year and trim, followed by what drives the differences and how weight affects towing, payload and fuel economy.

What Curb Weight Means (and What It Doesn’t)
Curb weight is the weight of the vehicle with all standard equipment, a full tank of fuel and all fluids, but with no passengers or cargo. It is not the same as:
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): the maximum the loaded vehicle may weigh, including people, cargo and trailer tongue weight. This is printed on the driver’s door jamb sticker.
- Payload: GVWR minus curb weight, which is roughly how much you can carry. Our CR-V load capacity guide covers this in detail.
- Shipping weight: sometimes quoted by dealers or online listings, measured without fuel. It can be lower than curb weight.
Options also change the number. A moonroof, navigation, larger wheels or a power tailgate each add a few pounds, so two cars with the same trim name can differ slightly.
Honda CR-V Curb Weight by Generation
The figures below are manufacturer-published or taken from spec databases that reproduce Honda data. Where a generation spans several years, we show one representative model year; weights within a generation usually shift by only a small amount from year to year as equipment changes.
| Generation | Representative Year | Lightest Version | Heaviest Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (1997–2001) | 2000 | LX FWD: 3,126 lb | EX / SE AWD: 3,219 lb |
| 2nd (2002–2006) | 2005 | LX FWD: 3,318 lb | SE AWD: 3,494 lb |
| 3rd (2007–2011) | 2010 | LX FWD: 3,386 lb | EX-L AWD: 3,554 lb |
| 4th (2012–2014) | 2012 | LX FWD: 3,305 lb | EX-L AWD: 3,529 lb |
| 4th, refreshed (2015–2016) | 2015 | LX FWD: 3,358 lb | Touring AWD: 3,624 lb |
| 5th, gas (2017–2022) | 2018 | LX FWD: 3,307 lb | Touring AWD: 3,512 lb |
| 5th, gas (refresh) | 2020 | LX FWD: 3,337 lb | Touring AWD: 3,569 lb |
| 5th, Hybrid (2020–2022) | 2020 | Hybrid LX AWD: 3,649 lb | Hybrid Touring AWD: 3,763 lb |
| 6th (2023–present) | 2024 | LX FWD: 3,472 lb | Sport Touring Hybrid AWD: 3,926 lb |
Two things stand out. First, the 2012 redesign actually cut weight compared with the late third-generation car, and the 2017 redesign did the same again at the LX level. Second, the big jump comes with the hybrid. The two-motor system and its battery pack add roughly 200–260 lb over a comparable gas model.
Current CR-V (2023–Present) Curb Weight by Trim
Honda’s official 2024 specifications list these weights and front/rear weight distributions. Gas trims use the 1.5-liter turbo; Sport, Sport-L and Sport Touring use the 2.0-liter two-motor hybrid.
| 2024 Trim | FWD Curb Weight | AWD Curb Weight | Weight Distribution (F/R, FWD / AWD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| LX | 3,472 lb | 3,591 lb | 59/41 / 58/42 |
| EX | 3,497 lb | 3,616 lb | 59/41 / 58/42 |
| EX-L | 3,525 lb | 3,635 lb | 58/42 / 58/42 |
| Sport Hybrid | 3,752 lb | 3,869 lb | 60/40 / 59/41 |
| Sport-L Hybrid | 3,777 lb | 3,893 lb | 60/40 / 59/41 |
| Sport Touring Hybrid | Not offered | 3,926 lb | — / 58/42 |
Figures for the 2023, 2025 and 2026 model years can differ slightly as Honda adjusts equipment. The newer TrailSport Hybrid is not included because we could not confirm its weight against an official Honda figure.
Fifth-Generation CR-V (2017–2022) by Trim
This is the most common CR-V on the used market, so here is the full breakdown for two representative years. The 2017–2019 LX used a 2.4-liter engine, while other trims used the 1.5-liter turbo. From 2020 every gas trim got the turbo, and the CR-V Hybrid arrived as an AWD-only model.
| Trim | 2018 FWD | 2018 AWD | 2020 FWD | 2020 AWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LX | 3,307 lb | 3,421 lb | 3,337 lb | 3,455 lb |
| EX | 3,358 lb | 3,473 lb | 3,398 lb | 3,514 lb |
| EX-L | 3,377 lb | 3,492 lb | 3,413 lb | 3,529 lb |
| Touring | 3,397 lb | 3,512 lb | 3,452 lb | 3,569 lb |
| Hybrid LX | — | — | — | 3,649 lb |
| Hybrid EX | — | — | — | 3,708 lb |
| Hybrid EX-L | — | — | — | 3,723 lb |
| Hybrid Touring | — | — | — | 3,763 lb |
Fourth-Generation CR-V (2012–2016) by Trim
The 2015 refresh brought direct injection, a CVT and a new Touring trim, and the weights reflect the added equipment.
| Trim | 2012 FWD | 2012 AWD | 2015 FWD | 2015 AWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LX | 3,305 lb | 3,426 lb | 3,358 lb | 3,479 lb |
| EX | 3,365 lb | 3,490 lb | 3,437 lb | 3,552 lb |
| EX-L | 3,408 lb | 3,529 lb | 3,457 lb | 3,576 lb |
| Touring | — | — | 3,521 lb | 3,624 lb |
What Adds Weight to a CR-V
All-wheel drive: about 100–125 lb
Across every generation since 2007, the AWD version of a given trim is consistently about 100 to 125 lb heavier than the FWD version. That covers the rear differential, driveshaft and the coupling unit. If you’re deciding between the two, our CR-V FWD vs AWD comparison looks at whether the traction is worth the weight and the small fuel economy penalty.
Hybrid system: about 200–260 lb
On the 2024 model, a Sport Hybrid AWD (3,869 lb) is 234 lb heavier than an EX-L AWD (3,635 lb), even though the EX-L has more luxury equipment. The battery, electric motors and power control unit account for the difference. In practice the extra torque from the electric motor more than masks it; see our hybrid vs gas performance comparison.
Trim content: about 50–165 lb
Moving up from LX to the top gas trim adds equipment such as a moonroof, power seats, a power tailgate, bigger wheels and extra sound insulation. Within one model year, the spread from LX to the top gas trim runs from about 50 lb (2024) to about 165 lb (2015).
How Weight Affects Towing, Payload and MPG
Payload. Because GVWR does not rise in step with curb weight on every trim, a heavier trim can have a slightly lower payload. Always calculate payload using the GVWR on your own door jamb sticker minus the actual weight of your trim.
Towing. Current gas CR-Vs are rated to tow 1,500 lb with the Honda hitch, while 2023-and-later hybrid trims are rated at 1,000 lb, despite being the heavier models. Curb weight matters because the combined weight of the SUV, passengers, cargo and trailer must stay within Honda’s limits. Check the full ratings in our CR-V towing capacity guide.
Fuel economy. Extra weight costs some fuel, mostly in stop-and-go driving. The hybrid gets around this by recovering energy under braking, which is why it still beats the lighter gas model on EPA ratings. Year-by-year numbers are in our CR-V MPG ratings guide.
How to Find the Exact Weight of Your CR-V
- Identify your exact model year, trim and drivetrain. The trim badge is on the tailgate; AWD models may also carry an “AWD” badge. Your registration or VIN decoder confirms the details.
- Check the owner’s manual. The specifications section lists curb weight for each version sold in your market.
- Read the door jamb label. The sticker on the driver’s door pillar shows GVWR and the tire and loading information, including maximum occupant and cargo weight.
- Weigh it if precision matters. For towing or RV planning, a public truck scale gives the real-world weight with your accessories, roof rack and typical cargo on board.
FAQ
How much does a Honda CR-V weigh in tons?
A current CR-V weighs about 1.74 to 1.96 US tons (3,472 to 3,926 lb for 2024). Older first-generation models are closer to 1.6 tons.
Is the CR-V Hybrid much heavier than the gas model?
Yes. On the 2024 model, comparing similarly equipped AWD versions, the hybrid adds about 230–260 lb. On the 2020–2022 models the gap was smaller, at about 195 lb between matching AWD trims. The electric motor’s instant torque means most drivers notice the extra power more than the extra weight.
Which Honda CR-V is the lightest?
The first-generation 2000 CR-V LX FWD at 3,126 lb is the lightest in our table. Among modern CR-Vs, the 2012 LX FWD (3,305 lb) and 2018 LX FWD (3,307 lb) are the lightest.
Does curb weight include the driver?
No. Curb weight includes a full tank of fuel and all fluids but no occupants or cargo. Add your passengers and luggage to get the real weight on the road.
The Bottom Line
A modern Honda CR-V weighs about 3,470 lb as a base FWD gas model and up to about 3,930 lb as a fully loaded AWD hybrid. AWD adds around 100–125 lb and the hybrid powertrain adds roughly 200–260 lb. For towing or payload calculations, use the exact figure for your trim and the GVWR on your door jamb, and confirm in your owner’s manual, since options and model-year changes can shift the numbers slightly.
