Honda CR-V Legroom and Headroom by Generation

The current Honda CR-V (2023–present) offers 41.3 inches of front legroom and 41.0 inches of rear legroom, according to Honda. Front headroom is 40.0 inches on the LX and 38.2 inches on moonroof-equipped trims. Front legroom has barely changed in 25 years. Rear legroom has grown by more than 4 inches since the first CR-V, and that is where newer models feel much roomier.

Below are headroom and legroom for every generation, how the moonroof changes the numbers, and what they mean for tall drivers and car seats.

Model Years (data year) Front Headroom Rear Headroom Front Legroom Rear Legroom
1997–2001 (2000) 40.5 in 39.2 in 41.5 in 36.7 in
2002–2006 (2005) 40.9 in 39.1 in 41.3 in 39.4 in
2007–2011 (2010) 40.9 in 38.6 in 41.3 in 38.5 in
2012–2016 (2015) 39.9 in 38.6 in 41.3 in 38.3 in
2017–2022 (2020) 40.1 in 39.2 in 41.3 in 40.4 in
2023–present (2024) 40.0 in 38.2 in 41.3 in 41.0 in

Headroom figures in this table are for trims without a moonroof. The 2020 and 2024 figures come from Honda’s official specifications. Earlier figures come from published spec databases that agree with each other. Interior measurements follow the SAE method, which uses fixed seat positions, so your real-world space depends on seat settings. Confirm the numbers for your exact trim in the owner’s manual or Honda’s spec sheet for that year.

How to Read Interior Measurements

Legroom and headroom figures are taken with the seats in standardized positions. Front legroom is measured from the accelerator pedal area to a reference point at the seat’s hip position, with the seat fully back. Rear legroom assumes the front seat is in a set position, so if a tall driver slides all the way back, the real space behind them is less than the spec sheet suggests. Headroom is measured from the seat’s reference point to the headliner at a slight angle. That is why two people of the same height can have very different experiences: torso length, seat height and recline all matter. Use the numbers to compare models and generations, then confirm in person.

How the Moonroof Affects Headroom

The moonroof’s glass panel, frame and sunshade sit below the roof skin, so they take space away from your head. Honda’s figures show the difference clearly:

Model Year Trims Without Moonroof Trims With Moonroof Difference
2020 (front) LX: 40.1 in EX, EX-L, Touring: 38.0 in 2.1 in
2020 (rear) LX: 39.2 in EX, EX-L, Touring: 39.1 in 0.1 in
2024 (front) LX: 40.0 in EX and above: 38.2 in 1.8 in

The penalty falls almost entirely on the front seats, because the moonroof is above the front row. Earlier CR-Vs follow the same pattern: moonroof-equipped trims, usually EX and above, list noticeably less front headroom than the base model. If you’re well over 6 ft, sit in a moonroof car before you buy. Our CR-V moonroof buyer’s guide covers which trims have one.

What Changed Between Generations

Front seats: steady for 25 years

Front legroom has sat at 41.3–41.5 inches since the first CR-V. Honda has used the extra length of later generations for the rear seat and cargo area rather than the front cabin. That’s a good result for drivers. At 41.3 inches, front legroom is competitive for a compact SUV, and it has been one of the CR-V’s constants.

Rear seats: the big gains

The second generation added 2.7 inches of rear legroom over the first, and the 2017 redesign added another 2.1 inches over the 2012–2016 car. The 2017–2022 CR-V was the first with more than 40 inches in back. The current model’s 41.0 inches comes close to matching front legroom. The 2023-and-later car’s longer wheelbase, 106.3 inches versus 104.7–104.8 inches on the previous generation, gives the rear seat a little more room again.

Rear headroom: slightly less on the newest model

Rear headroom on the 2024 model (38.2 inches) is about an inch less than on the 2017–2022 car (39.2 inches on the LX). Honda doesn’t break out the reason, but the figure is consistent across trims. Most adults under 6 ft will still have room, but very tall rear passengers may notice the difference.

Shoulder Room, Hip Room and Passenger Volume

Headroom and legroom only tell part of the story. Here are Honda’s figures for the two most recent generations:

Measurement 2020 CR-V 2024 CR-V
Front shoulder room 57.9 in 57.9 in
Rear shoulder room 55.6 in 55.9 in
Front hip room 55.1 in 55.6 in
Rear hip room 49.5 in 52.6 in
Passenger volume (LX / moonroof trims) 105.9 / 102.9 cu ft 106 / 103.5 cu ft

The 3.1-inch gain in rear hip room on the current model makes a real difference when you fit three people across the back. For more on width, see our dedicated CR-V hip room article, and for exterior size, our CR-V dimensions guide.

How to Check Whether a CR-V Fits You

  1. Test the trim you’ll actually buy. Headroom differs by up to about 2 inches between moonroof and non-moonroof trims, so an LX test drive won’t tell you how an EX-L fits.
  2. Set your driving position first. Lower the seat fully, then raise it until you can see clearly over the hood. Adjust the steering wheel for reach and tilt, then slide the seat until your knees stay slightly bent at full brake pedal travel.
  3. Check the headroom gap. With a normal posture, you want at least a fist’s width between your head and the headliner or moonroof frame.
  4. Sit behind yourself. Leave the front seat in your driving position and sit in the rear seat behind it. That’s the honest test of rear legroom for your family.
  5. Fit your car seats. If you use rear-facing child seats, install them at the dealer and check how far the front seat can still slide back. The 2017-and-later CR-Vs’ 40-plus inches of rear legroom makes this much easier than in older models.

FAQ

Is the Honda CR-V good for tall drivers?

Generally yes. Every generation offers at least 41.3 inches of front legroom. The main limit is headroom on moonroof trims, which list about 38 inches up front. Drivers well over 6 ft should try a moonroof trim before buying, or consider the LX, which has the most front headroom.

Which CR-V has the most rear legroom?

The 2023-and-later CR-V, at 41.0 inches. The 2017–2022 model is close behind at 40.4 inches. The 2007–2016 models offer about 38.3–38.5 inches.

Does the CR-V Hybrid have the same interior space?

On the 2020–2022 models, Honda lists the same headroom and legroom for hybrid and gas versions of each trim. On the 2024 model, Honda’s figures for EX and above, including the hybrid Sport trims, are the same as other moonroof trims.

Can three adults fit in the CR-V’s back seat?

For short trips, yes, especially in the 2023-and-later model with 52.6 inches of rear hip room. On longer drives, two adults plus a child is more comfortable. The CR-V seats five in total; there is no third row. See our article on CR-V seating capacity.

The Bottom Line

Every Honda CR-V gives front-seat occupants about 41.3 inches of legroom. Rear legroom is where the generations differ, from 36.7 inches in the first model to 41.0 inches today. Front headroom is around 40 inches on non-moonroof trims and about 38 inches with a moonroof. If headroom matters to you, test the exact trim you plan to buy, and confirm the figures for your model year in your owner’s manual.
